Latino Psychological Assoc. holds first meeting on campus
The Latino Psychological Association of New Jersey held its inaugural meeting on campus in November. The Association's mission is to serve as an advocacy group with regard to the education of psychologists and other mental health professionals in the advancement of mental health research, training and the treatment of Latinos in the state of New Jersey.

The Association Board of Directors includes (pictured, from left) Milton Fuentes, treasurer; Riva Bennett, secretary; Magda Garcia of Psychology, vice president; Robert McCormick of Psychology and director of MSU's Hispanic Institute, president. Also pictured is Rosalind Dorlen, president of the New Jersey Psychological Association and Ricardo Martinez and Maria Xiques, members-at-large.

Outdoor art exhibit installed at campus entrance
A major art installation, SYZYGY I, is located on the west side of campus near the Clove Road entrance.

The work is a collaboration between MSU's Artist-in-Residence Osvaldo Romberg and graduate students Christopher Corey, Peerayot Gwilliam, Joanne Lefrak, Christina Pineros, Paul Shields, D'Mitri Wilkins and MSU Critic-in- Residence Dominique Nahas.

Syzygy is a word used in a variety of disciplines to refer to a pair of connected or correlative objects. SYZYGY I forms a dynamic "earth-work" type pattern of four interlocked and crisscrossing forms. Each pattern contains the floor plan on a one-to-one scale of a house of worship. The four temples include a Buddhist temple, the Cishi Pavilion of Longxing Monastery (circa 971); the Polish synagogue Lutomiersk from the 18th century; San Sebastiano Basilica of Milan, built in 1577; and the Iranian mosque in Saljuq, built between 555-1160.

Romberg has participated in numerous exhibitions both here and abroad, most notably last year's Johannesburg Biennial and South Korea's 1997 Kwangju Biennale and Bypass.

The SYZYGY project documentation, with models and notes and, photographs of the participating graduate students, will be entered in the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art's millennial exhibition, "Faith."
