Joseph Attanasio of Communication Sciences and Disorders had his article, "A Meta-Analysis of Selected Studies in Anxiety and Stuttering: Response to Menzies et al., 1999," published in the February issue of the American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology as part of an exchange of views between Attanasio and his colleagues at the Australian Stuttering Research Centre, University of Sydney, on the role of anxiety in stuttering. He also had "Where Is the Gap? A Diverse View of Stuttering and Stuttering Research" published in the February issue of Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books. The article is a review of the book Stuttering Research and Practice: Bridging the Gap. All reviews are written by invitation only.

Kathy Gainor of Counseling, Human Development and Educational Leadership was the keynote speaker at "Teach In, Speak Out," a body awareness program at Rutgers University. Gainor addressed aspects of body image as part of the university's fifth annual Body Appreciation Week.

Rick Giancola, who coached the football team to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals this season, will be honored by the Cedar Grove Rotary Club on May 10 at the Friar Tuck Inn. A Cedar Grove resident, Giancola is the all-time winningest coach in MSU history. He guided the Red Hawks to a 9-2 mark and the 1999 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship, the sixth NJAC during his 17-year tenure. The title earned Montclair State its fifth berth in the NCAA Division III Playoffs where Montclair defeated Buffalo State and Western Connecticut before falling to Rowan University in the quarterfinals.

John Korky of Biology and Molecular Biology was noted in the Feb. 2 issue of Irish Times, Dublin, in a story headlined "Irish Frogs are Ancient History." The story notes that "a granting of full heritage to the natterjacks should help public interest in their conservation, a theme taken up strongly by Korky in the IBS Research Bulletin."

Laura Kramer of Sociology is the 1999-2000 chair of the Eastern Sociological Society's Committee on the Status of Women. She also moderated an open forum on stratification in the profession at the Society's annual meeting in Baltimore this month.

Phillip LeBel of Economics was a member of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education evaluation team for the Bernard M. Baruch College at the City University of New York.

Jocelyn Santana of English was a featured speaker at the Dominican Women's Caucus annual celebration of International Women's Day at Columbia University's Low Library on March 5. Santana gave a presentation, "Educational Challenges Facing Dominican-American Women in the 21st Century," with an emphasis on the positive impact Dominican mothers have on the academic success of their daughters as they enter American schools.

Sacher Lecture to feature alumnus Larry Ferrara
Alumnus Larry Ferrara '71, chair of the Music Department at New York University, will be the guest speaker at the Jack Sacher Memorial Lecture Series.

The Lecture Series was established in memory of Professor Jack Sacher to honor distinguished MSU music alumni. Sacher, who retired two years ago, died of cancer last summer at age 68. He was known for teaching music history with great love and rigor, and he had an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject. He authored several books, the most recent Opera: A Listener's Guide.

The lecture will take place Monday, April 10, at noon in McEachern Recital Hall. As part of this year's event, two recitals will be held in conjunction with the lecture series. On Sunday, April 9, faculty and alumni will present "An Evening of Chamber Music" at 7:30 p.m. in McEachern Recital Hall. Featured performers will include Jennifer Sacher Wiley, Basia Danilow, Kevin Pruner, John Palatucci, Sophia Anastasia, Robin Gordon, Chaim Zemach, and Ruth Rendleman.

The MSU Choir will present a concert under the direction of Dr. James Imhoff on Monday, April 10, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.

The lecture and concerts are free. However, donations for the Jack Sacher Memorial Scholarship fund can be sent to the Montclair State University Foundation.

International art exhibitions on display through April 14
Transcending Boundaries, artwork by five artists from Shanghai, China, will be on display in the University Gallery. The exhibition was organized by Cathy Bebout of Fine Arts and is part of an exchange project. Artwork by Montclair State visual arts faculty was exhibited in Shanghai in September 1999. The on-campus display includes 19 mixed media paintings by Mi Qiu, Zhang Xiao Gang, Xue Song, Qu Feng Guo and Fang Li Jun.

An exhibition of photographs by Vietnamese photographer Bui Xuan Huy and American photographer Abby Robinson will be featured in Gallery One in the Life Hall Annex. "Near and Far Apart" offers visual proof of ways artists learn from each other and of the influences they share.

Hours for both exhibitions are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Science and Math Week Scheduled at Berra Stadium
Nearly 1,200 fourth and fifth graders from local school districts‹including Montclair, Clifton and Paterson‹will participate in Science and Math Week, an interactive sports education program at Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, April 3 through 7.

Co-sponsored by the College of Science and Mathematics, the program includes a series of classes designed and taught by MSU faculty. The classes are based on scientific and mathematical principles as they apply to sports and athletes. Topics include the physics of baseball, geology of the stadium, muscle movement in baseball and mathematics of baseball.

Advertising agency wins two awards for MSU campaign
The Lunar Group, Inc. in Mountain Lakes has won two awards from the New Jersey Communications, Advertising and Marketing Association for its work on Montclair State's advertising campaign.

In the category of Outdoor Advertising, the agency won a silver trophy for the Montclair State billboards, and bus and van advertisements.

In the category of Direct Mail, the Lunar Group won another silver trophy for the "Montclairity" piece created for Continuing Education and The Graduate School.

David Cole invites members of the campus community who have received one of his paint stirrers to return them temporarily so they can be part of "In-Gathering: An Installation," an exhibit of David's work that will be in the University Gallery from May 22 to July 21. Stirrers can be brought to the Gallery or mailed to David Cole, 852 Valley Road, Upper Montclair, N.J. 07043. Please include a return address so the stirrer can be returned at the end of the exhibition. A reception for the exhibit will be held Thursday, May 25, from 4 to 6 p.m.
