Norma Connolly of Legal Studies, Laura Kramer of Sociology, Linda Gould Levine of Spanish and Italian, and Sally McWilliams of English, all faculty in the Women's Studies Program, presented a panel, "Approaches to Teaching the Introductory Women's Studies Course" at a conference at Drew University titled, "Theories and Practices: A Working Conference in Women's Studies."

Robert Cray of History had an article, "The Revolutionary Spy as Hero: Nathan Hale in the Public Memory, 1776-1846," published as the lead essay in Connecticut History. Dorothy Deremer of Computer Science was a member of a refereed panel on "IT and CS Programs" at the annual Technical Symposium of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group in CS Education (SIGCSE) in Austin, Texas. The international conference was attended by nearly 1,000 participants involved in CS in higher education.

Thomas Devlin of Mathematical Sciences recently gave a three-day workshop on advanced statistical methods to the engineers and materials scientists at IBM Microelectronics Division in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He has been invited to give another workshop in May on design and analysis of experiments.

Carmen Fernandez Klohe of Spanish and Italian presented "The Bourgeois Domestic Environment as a Refuge From Impermanence" at the conference, "The Poetics of Space," in Binghamton, N.Y. In addition, her article, "Spain in New York: Archer M. Huntington and the Hispanic Society of America," was published in Diario Las Americas on March 12.

Thomas Puryear of the Educational Opportunity Fund was the New Jersey delegate to the National Summit on Africa held in Washington, D.C. Feb. 16 to 20. The purpose of the summit, where the theme was "Education and Culture," was to develop a nationwide effort to create a shared policy agenda to guide U.S. relations with the countries of Africa, educate the American public about Africa, and broaden and strengthen the network of Africa's supporters in the United States.

Marc Semler of Institutional Research presented "Introduction to Statistical Reporting Using FOCUS" at a recent SIS Conference in Orlando, Fla. He also hosted the second annual "Birds of a Feather" session for Institutional Research.

Rolf Sternberg of Earth and Environmental Studies presented a paper, "A Decade of Geographic Energy Research in Latin America," at the Conference of Latin Americanist Geographers in Austin, Texas in January. He also had an article, "Brazilian Amazonia: A Metamorphosism Progress," published in Revista Geografica, Enero-Junio.

Jacalyn Willis of Great Ideas in Science has received $10,000 from the New Jersey Statewide Systemic Initiative to sponsor regional conferences that will introduce high school biology teachers and supervisors to exemplary curriculum materials.

Students recognized for poetry writing
Two students in the Department of French, German and Russian‹Lociano Benjamin and Laura Ginenthal‹have each been awarded the French Cultural Services Prize for poetry writing. Benjamin, a graduate student, and Ginenthal, an undergraduate, were honored at the French Embassy in New York City on March 20.

"This is a prestigious award offered by the French Cultural Services division of the French government," said Department Chair Lois Oppenheim. "Laura and Lociano's national recognition brings honor not only to themselves, but to our Department and, indeed, to the University. These are two very talented students and I'm truly delighted they have won."

The contest sought poems that incorporated the theme of travel and diversity. Benjamin won for his poem "Voyage‹Coucher du Soleil á Nice" and Ginenthal for her poem, "Perspectives." As part of her prize, Ginenthal, a senior French major who hopes to teach French and Italian, will spend 10 days in France in July at the Cote d'Azure participating in a variety of cultural activities.

Commission awards grant for campus improvements
Montclair State University received approval from the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education to use part of its $28.1 million from the Higher Education Capital Improvement Fund for improvements to the campus.

On March 25, the Commission approved the University's use of $12.1 million for the renovation of College, Finley and Richardson halls, installation of fire equipment, replacement of outdated or malfunctioning electrical systems and roof repairs. William Paterson and Fairleigh Dickinson universities also received grants, the first to be distributed from the fund that was established last year by the Legislature and Gov. Christine Whitman to help four-year schools pay for building and renovation projects. The Commission approved the release of $133 million of the fund's $550 million.

Alumna's photographs on display in Gallery One
"Jazz Legends: A Love Story," a series of black and white photographs of jazz musicians hand painted by alumna Paula Ross '74 M.A. will be on display April 17 through 28 in Gallery One.

Ross says her work is a homage to the visionaries and the musicians she has respected and responded to ever since she can remember. She uses her camera as an instrument to record a precise moment of musical exaltation, then she expresses her own feelings through the choice of colors she selects for the photographs.

Gallery hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. An opening reception will be held on Tuesday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Grey reads original poetry at annual Read Aloud
Graduate students in "Read 501: Techniques of Reading Improvement in Secondary Schools," enjoyed hearing Richard Grey of Counseling, Human Development and Educational Leadership read his original poetry. The reading was part of the annual Read Alouds coordinated by Maria Schantz of Reading and Educational Media. This is the fifth year of the program. After the reading, students had the opportunity to talk with Grey about his reading and the poetry.

Red Hawks take Softball Classic title
Montclair State University was named MSU/WPU Softball Classic champions on tie-breaker criteria March 25 after posting at 3-1 record during the co-hosted event on campus. After SUNY-Cortland, Salisbury State and MSU entered day two of the tournament undefeated and split their games for the day, the Red Hawks claimed the title based on the run differential criteria.

It's a girl!
President Susan A. Cole and her husband, David, announce the birth of their first grandchild, Sonia Cole Kelly, born April 1 to the couple's son, Simon Cole, and his wife, Laura Kelly. Sonia came into the world weighing 7 pounds, 15 ounces. With red hair and blue eyes, Sonia is described by her unbiased grandmother as "the most beautiful baby ever born."

Since his arrival in September 1998, David Cole, husband of MSU President Susan A. Cole, has been distributing his artistic paint stirrers to campus visitors. The colorful, one-of-a-kind stirrers will now be part of an exhibit of David's work titled "In-gathering: An Installation." The exhibit will be at the University Gallery from May 22 through July 21. Stirrer owners are encouraged to attend the opening reception on Monday, May 22, from 1 to 4 p.m. to hang their stirrers in the exhibit. Those who cannot attend can mail or deliver the stirrer to the University Gallery or to the President's Office. A return address is required as all stirrers will be returned at the end of exhibit. The address can be written on the name tag attached to the stirrer or on a separate paper.

The Linguistics Department has established a listserv designed to provide an opportunity for faculty and staff to discuss difficulties they have encountered teaching non-native speakers of English, investigate underlying cultural assumptions about education and classroom behavior that may contribute to drop-out rates, and explore methods of retaining these students.
