On the Job with:

Minto Gill

Somehow, we're all connected to Minto Gill.

Director of Systems and Networks, and acting director of Telecommunications, Minto keeps the connectivity between all campus computers.

"A typical day includes reviewing system logs, making sure the mission critical servers are operating properly, the networking infrastructure across the 35 buildings on campus are all interacting and our Internet connections are up and running without glitches, and taking care of any additional time-sensitive needs," explained the 15-year MSU veteran. And anyone who knows Minto can tell you that he can draw a diagram to demonstrate just about how anything works.

"It's a challenging, evolving environment where nothing is stagnant from day to day. There's always something new," said Minto. "Technology changes so much on a daily basis, so I'm never bored."

Minto, who earned a bachelor's degree in computer science from Montclair State, worked at AT&T as a computer consultant for four years prior to joining Montclair State. "I enjoy working in an educational environment and, as a student, I liked the professors and the campus environment," he said. "I thought Information Technology was a good area where I could contribute to the campus community."

Minto keeps up with the latest in computer technology and browses technical manuals in his spare time. He also enjoys skiing, hiking, golfing, boating on Lake George and spending time with his wife, Valeska, and two daughters, Brianna and Nicolette.

What does the technological future hold for Montclair State? "From the networking and telecommunications perspective, I see voice, video and data converging, and the University taking advantage of wireless technology and Gigabit backbone," Minto said. "I also see Internet access speeds increasing as the cost of these services drop in price. With this said, I envision movement toward Internet-based application services and servers." And that's straight from the techie's mouth.
