Campus community mourns loss of colleague
A memorial service was held on campus earlier last month for Diane Cooper, coordinator of Academic Monitoring, who was killed in a car accident on April 24.

A member of the Montclair State community since 1988, Cooper was an executive board member of the AFT- Local 1904. She was a member of the East Orange Board of Education for the past six years, president of the Essex County School Boards Association, a member of the New Jersey School Boards Association Legislative Committee and a representative of the National School Boards Association. She is survived by her two daughters, Usiku and Sallie; her mother and father, a sister and a grandson. Donations to the family can be sent to Yvette Hall in the Academic Success Center. Make checks payable to Usiku Cooper. Donations to a scholarship fund for Sallie, a student at Hampton University, can be made payable to Sallie Cooper's Scholarship Fund and forwarded directly to Hampton University.

English students honored for academic achievements
Thirteen English majors were honored for academic excellence at the department's annual scholarship and awards night.

Elliot Souder received the Moe McGee Scholarship; Lizbeth Victorero, the Bessie Saslaw Solomon Memorial Scholarship; Tina de Amorin, the Miriam R. Taub Scholarship; and Greta Muca, the Special Bondon Scholarship.

For excellence in the field of humanities, Joy Thompson received the W. Bernard Fleischmann Memorial Award; for excellence in studies of Shakespeare, Bonnie Slockett was awarded the Anthony Lovasco Shakespeare Award; for excellence in writing about film, the Meranze Tomlinson Film Award was given to Josˇ Freire; for excellence in Creative Writing, the English Department Award in Poetry was awarded to Joy Thompson and Katrina Kinsella.

Susan Carney was awarded the Mary Bondon Graduate Scholarship and graduate student Virginia Kennedy received the Lawrence H. Conrad Memorial Scholarship.

Board News
At its April 27 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved five faculty appointments, nine professional/managerial staff appointments, 14 professional staff reappointments, one professional staff personal development leave, 25 faculty promotions, 21 faculty/librarian sabbaticals and five leaves of absence without pay. The next meeting of the Board will be held Thursday, June 15 at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Center, Room 419.
