On the Job with:

Marcus Jackson

When Marcus Jackson is not dancing the night away at one of Manhattan's hottest clubs, he's motivating the campus community to get into their own groove by participating in the free fitness programs offered by Campus Recreation.

The office's assistant director was born and raised in East St. Louis, Ill., and graduated from Southern Illinois University with a degree in exercise physiology. He joined Montclair State last year and teaches the regularly scheduled fitness classes offered to the campus community including step, resistance toning and training, high- and low-impact aerobics, and hydro fit aqua, the most popular class among faculty and staff. "As we age, there is more of a tendency to gain weight and develop chronic diseases," said the 26-year-old instructor. "With regular exercise, such as these classes, we all can reduce these risks."

Marcus recently started a new program, Fitness Persons Troop, in which seven students are being trained and certified in aerobic instruction to teach fitness classes in the spring. "It's going to be a lot of hard work for these students," Marcus said. "Something as simple as proper warm-up techniques must be learned and taught correctly." Students also are employed by Campus Recreation as attendants at the Fitness Center and lifeguards at Panzer Pool.

Marcus enjoys the fast pace of his job and watching others benefit from the classes and programs. "Knowing I have the opportunity to help build a program from the ground up and watch it become successful, gives me satisfaction," he said.
