On the Job with:

Lindsay Gambini

Lindsay Gambini may not be starring in any shows at Memorial Auditorium, but her off-stage performances as director of Arts Programming deserve a standing ovation.

"It's a tough balancing act to research shows for the campus community," she said. "I have to find programs that are sellable, affordable, available and culturally diverse. I do that by previewing New York performances and networking with other presenters. I also have to keep in touch with theaters in the area to make sure we aren't producing similar performances."

Lindsay gauges the campus community's interest in the arts by talking to people, circulating material to faculty and staff, and getting input from the Student Government Association. She's also responsible for booking and researching theater, music, dance and family-oriented programs.

Lindsay came to MSU in 1996 from the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York, where she served as executive director. She is the mother of four adopted childrenÑMichael, 13; Harry, 12; Emma, 9; and Anna 3.

She holds three master's degrees in the arts and is pursuing a doctorate in education at Rutgers University. "The teaching skills I gained in my education help me to develop educational programming at various levels," said Lindsay. "I also write study guides for teaching in the artsÑespecially theaterÑwhich is my strong point." Lindsay says the best part of her job is bringing performing arts to campus. "It's a pleasure to know that I've introduced the arts to students."

Although most of her accomplishments are behind the scenes, Lindsay occasionally steps into the spotlight to sing a capella with a group called Olympia's Daughters. "We sing a variety of music from gospel to popular, and we travel up and down the east coast; its exciting and I enjoy it very much," she said.
