A gathering of Web masters...More than 34 people from 19 colleges and universities in the state gathered on campus last month for the first New Jersey Higher Education Web Masters' Conference, sponsored by Montclair State University. The goal of the conference, coordinated by MSU's Web Manager Cindy Meneghin (seated front row on left), was to foster communication and an exchange of information about the Web. One result of the conference was the formation of the New Jersey Higher Education Web Masters Association (www.montclair.edu/njhewa), which will sponsor Web-related conferences throughout the year. A hawk named Rocky...The Red Hawk no longer has to go through life nameless thanks to a campuswide contest to name the athletic mascot. Nearly 200 people submitted names, ranging from Bubba and Clairmont to the Mighty Hawk. The nominations were narrowed to five-Rocky, Monty, Red, Rusty and Harry the Hawk-and members of the campus community voted online and in ballot boxes for their favorite. The Red Hawk was officially given his name Jan. 24 during halftime of the men's basketball game against William Paterson. Students exhibit and sell works...There's still time to see "mfa@msu.2001" at the University Art Gallery. The student exhibition, which will be up through Feb. 9, includes a variety of works from bronze sculptures and paintings to ceramics and fiber art. All the works in the exhibit are for sale. "The works are inventive, experimental and bold," said Teresa Rodriguez, assistant director of the Art Galleries. The artists are Shannon Bellum, Peerayot Gwilliam, Jiana Kim, Robert Kleinschmidt, Hisayo Kushida, Joanne LeFrak, Mary Jo Nemeth, Cristina Pineros, Elaine Schnoor, Fran Shalom, F. Paul Shields, Jr., Lara Tilley, Betty Vera, Tracy Waaka, Lee Allen Wells and Demitri Wilkins.

Student forfeits trip to Super Bowl to help cousin

For Fawzia Afzal-Khan of English, heading the University's Cultural Studies Faculty Group seems to be a natural extension of her own research. For years, Afzal-Khan has explored other cultures, particularly those of her home country of Pakistan, asking questions about power and ideology as determinants in the construction of culture, while paying special attention to cultural phenomena she believes are too often marginalized by mainstream definitions. Afzal-Khan then brings her experiences and findings back to the classroom to share with students.Full Story

Montclair State University head baseball coach Norm Schoenig, who led the Red Hawks to the 2000 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III national championship, was honored Feb. 4 by the New Jersey Sports Writers Association at its 65th anniversary banquet in Edison.Full Story
