MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- The third Northern Regional Science Olympiad Tournament for area middle and high school students will be held at Montclair State University Thursday, Jan. 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a snow date of Jan. 14. The Olympiad is sponsored by MSU's College of Science and Mathematics in partnership with the Research and Development Council of New Jersey. All events will be held in the University's science classrooms and laboratories.

"We are excited that this outstanding science competition will again be held at Montclair State University," said Dr. Robert Prezant, Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics.  "We expect hundreds of outstanding students from 17 middle schools and 18 high schools from across Northern New Jersey to compete. The Science Olympiad covers a wide range of subject matter, from biology and earth science to chemistry, physics, computers and technology. These challenging categories require mastery and knowledge of facts, concepts, processes, skills and scientific applications."

According to Dr. Jinan Jaber, assistant Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics and regional tournament director, "Preparing and participating in such competitions would hopefully encourage students to consider careers in science, technology, research and engineering at an early age. Through recognition of their achievement in these areas, students will be motivated and inspired to continue their scientific inquiries and pursuits."

The tournament is coordinated by the College of Science and Mathematics faculty. Volunteer faculty from MSU and Research and Development Council members are serving as event coordinators and are assisted by undergraduate and graduate students.

Additionally, representatives from the University's Undergraduate Admissions Office will provide application information. Campus tours are also available. For more information, contact James Davison in the Admissions Office at (973) 655-4253.

The New Jersey Science Olympiad has been on the leading edge of educational innovations since 1993. These innovations include high academic standards; demonstration of skills through performance testing; learning through hands-on, minds-on activities; cooperative learning through events that require teamwork; and improved self-concept through success in achieving high standards.

Other regional competitions are being held in January at Raritan Valley Community College and Camden Community College. The winners of these competitions will compete in the state finals at Middlesex Community College March 14.

Additional information can be found by Calling the College of Science and Mathematics at (973) 655-5352 or at www.njscienceolympiad.org.
