The magazine will present the award at a January 26 luncheon at the Park Avenue Club in Florham Park. Dr. Cole said she was proud to accept the award on behalf of a university that has been preparing young women - and men - to be leaders for the past 100 years. "From our start as a teachers college a century ago to the comprehensive university we are today, Montclair State has prepared young women and men to make a difference in their communities, our state and the nation," Dr. Cole said. "I'm proud to accept this award on behalf of a University that remains committed to preparing tomorrow's leaders and helping New Jersey meet the challenges of a changing world." Dr. Cole became Montclair State University's first woman president in 1998 and has led the University through a dynamic era characterized by dramatic growth and increasing recognition for academic excellence. With a student population of 16,000 Montclair State University is New Jersey's second largest university. It is also one of its fastest growing, with a planned enrollment target of 18,000 students As part of that growth, Dr. Cole has directed a $250 million capital construction program that is changing the face of the 246-acre campus in suburban Montclair. Completed projects include a 500-seat, state-of-the-art performance venue for music, dance and theater events; a student housing complex featuring a fitness center and outdoor swimming pool; a new train station to take students into nearby Manhattan; and University Hall - the largest building on campus, with facilities ranging from a 200-seat lecture hall to comfortable student study lounges. Judy Chapman, editor of Garden State Woman, said Dr. Cole was selected because she is a role model for young women, affects the lives of women and girls on a daily basis and is viewed as a leader among her peers. "We are thrilled to have such an accomplished person as part of our group," said Chapman. A Brooklyn native, Dr. Cole earned three degrees in English and American literature: a B.A. degree from Barnard College, Columbia University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Brandeis University. Before coming to Montclair State University, she served as president of Metropolitan State University in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota from 1993 to 1998 and as Vice President for University Administration and Personnel at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey from 1980 to 1991. She was also Associate University Dean for Academic Affairs at Antioch University and Visiting Senior Fellow in Academic Administration at the City University of New York. Dr. Cole currently serves on the boards of the Liberty Science Center, Mountainside Hospital and the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce and has served on the Property Tax Convention Task Force, appointed by Governor McGreevey, as co-chair of Governor DiFrancesco's World Class Economy Task Force, as a member of Governor Whitman's trade missions to South America and Asia, and as co-chair of Governor McGreevey's higher education transition team and on his Education cabinet.
