MONTCLAIR -- The growing problem of gangs in suburban New Jersey, and the implications for teachers and family service workers, will be the subject of a seminar at Montclair State University. The seminar takes place from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9, at University Hall, Room 1050.

Former gang members, as well as representatives of the New Jersey State Police Street Gang Unit, the Gang Intelligence Unit of the Paterson Police Department and Montclair State University’s Department of Family and Child Studies will join in a panel discussion to explore the growing problem of gang activity beyond New Jersey’s core urban areas, and what that means for community service workers.

The audience for the event is expected to include Montclair State University students who are preparing for careers in education and family services, as well as local school district and law enforcement officials from surrounding communities.

The seminar is sponsored by Project C.O.P.E. (Communities Organizing for Prevention and Empowerment), a five-year federal initiative awarded to Dr. Robert Reid, associate professor, Department of Family and Child Studies within the College of Education and Human Services at Montclair State University.

“It’s important that prospective teachers and family service workers understand the spread of gang activity in New Jersey, because it can impact the work they do with children and families,” said Dr. Reid, program director for the Project C.O.P.E. initiative.
