Contact: Montclair, N.J. – Internationally renowned biographer Neil Baldwin will become Montclair State University's Distinguished Visiting Professor of History at the start of the 2006-2007 academic year. Dr. Baldwin will teach courses in History and in the University's Honors Program; co-chair a Task Force to develop a proposal for an American Studies program; offer public lectures, and serves as a resource for fellow faculty members during his three-year appointment. "Dr. Baldwin will be sharing his wealth of experience across many the disciplines and departments of this University," said Mary Papazian, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS). "We are delighted to welcome Dr. Baldwin into Montclair State's community of world class faculty and look forward to the opportunity to gain his insight and guidance in creating a new field of study within CHSS." A resident of nearby Glen Ridge, N.J., Dr. Baldwin's work includes biographies of William Carlos Williams, Man Ray, Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. "I have admired Montclair State's growth and dynamism over the past two decades," Dr. Baldwin said, "and now look forward to working on one of the University's new frontiers by helping to create a cutting-edge American Studies program. I am thrilled to be gaining so many new colleagues -- and most of all, can't wait to re-enter the undergraduate classroom." Dr. Baldwin was the founding executive director of the National Book Foundation, which bestows the esteemed National Book Awards and conducts a wide range of literary outreach programs around the country. He stepped down in 2003, after 15 years, to work on his new book. "The American Revelation: Ten Ideals That Shaped Our Country from the Puritans to the Cold War" received widespread critical acclaim when published by St. Martin's Press in May 2005. The paperback edition was released in June, 2006. Dr. Baldwin's previous book, "Henry Ford and the Jews: The Mass-Production of Hate" (Public Affairs, November 2001) was a finalist for the 2001-2002 National Jewish Book Award in History. A New York City native, Dr. Baldwin received his B.A. in English from the University of Rochester and his Ph.D. in Modern American Poetry from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has taught literature and creative writing at the City College of New York, Hunter College, Baruch College, The New School University, Fordham University and New York University. Further information about Dr. Baldwin and his work can be found at www.neilbaldwinbooks.com or by contacting Ann Frechette at (973) 655-4333/frechettea@mail.montclair.edu. Montclair State is New Jersey's second largest and fastest growing university. It offers the advantages of a large university--a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum with a global focus, a broad variety of superior graduate programs through the doctoral level, and a diverse faculty and student body--combined with a small college's attention to students.
