Montclair State University will host a Hispanic/Latino Summit to discuss
challenges facing Latino youth. The event takes place 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Tuesday, August 28, in University Hall, Room 1070.
The summit was prompted by findings of a survey administered to high school students in Paterson by Montclair State University in which Latino adolescents reported a greater inclination than non-Latino students for a variety of risk-taking behaviors. These behaviors included drug and alcohol use, youth violence and sexual risk.
The findings underscored an urgent need to begin a dialog regarding the
structural, social, and economic barriers interfering with the academic and future success of Latino youth. Featured speakers include former New York State Congressman Herman Badillo, the nation's first Puerto Rican-born congressman and author of the book, One Nation, One Standard: An Ex-Liberal on How Hispanics Can
Succeed Just Like Other Immigrant Groups. Paterson Mayor Jose "Joey" Torres will also attend. The summit is presented by Project C.O.P.E. (Communities Organizing for
Prevention and Empowerment), a program at Montclair State University made possible through a five-year federal grant awarded to Dr. Robert Reid, associate professor, Department of Family and Child Studies within the University's College of Education and Human Services. Media coverage is encouraged. For additional information, contact the Project C.O.P.E. office at (973) 655-7388.
Montclair State University
Montclair State is New Jersey's second largest university. It offers the advantages of a large university--a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum with a global focus, a broad variety of superior graduate programs through the doctoral level, and a diverse faculty and student body--combined with a small college's attention to students.
