World music and dance, theatre and 'Peter Rabbit' highlight Great Events spring season

UPPER MONTCLAIR, N. J. -- There is something for everyone -- from Indian dance to "Peter Rabbit" -- in the Great Events spring series at Montclair State University.

Standard tickets to all performances are $25 with $5 off when purchasing tickets for three or more events. Tickets for seniors, students, MSU faculty, staff, alumni and children are $15. All Family Event tickets are $15. All performances are in the University's Memorial Auditorium. Great Events also presents a series of performances for school audiences. WORLD MUSIC AND DANCE

Friday, March 5, 7:30 p.m. The North Indian troupe, Anjani's Kathak Dance of India, features quicksilver bare footwork, dazzling pirouettes, exquisitely detailed hand movements and theatrical facial expressions, all performed to complex rhythms.

Sunday, March 14, 7:30 p.m. Named "entertainment group of the year" by the Irish Voice and Aer Lingus, Cherish the Ladies is the most sought-after and successful Irish-American group in Celtic music.

Saturday, May 1, 7:30 p.m. Chen and Dancers' "Adopted Land" features the innovative modern dance company which has created a uniquely Asian-American expression by embodying its cultural heritage. Audiences love the silks, fans, tai-ch'i and Chinese opera movements.

THEATRE

Friday, March 12, 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 13, 1999, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. "Grace and Glorie" features Pat Carroll and Bonnie Franklin as a crusty, illiterate Southern farm woman and a savvy New York businesswoman in a play that makes the sparks fly. Audiences laugh and cry at this warm play by Tom Ziegler.

FAMILY EVENTS

Friday, Feb. 19, 7:30 p.m. "The Safety Zone" stars Roscoe Orman, "Gordon" of "Sesame Street" fame. Magic combines with important safety lessons in this joyful, interactive new live show. Intended for children aged 3 to 8.

Friday, April 2, 7:30 p.m. The Cleveland Signstage Theatre presents "Peter Rabbit." Based on the classic stories of Beatrix Potter, the show features Peter living in the mountains of Appalachia where his adventures continue to be heart-stopping. The play is performed in both American Sign Language and spoken English. Intended for children aged 4 to 10.

MSU is located at the intersection of Valley Road and Normal Avenue in Upper Montclair. The campus is one mile south of the junction of routes 3 and 46, 14 miles west of New York City.
