Community Leadership and Mentoring

This issue area is primarily a project of our Freshman Leadership Learning Community. Freshman student leaders in this program serve as mentors to area middle school students perceived to be at-risk academically or socially. The primary goals of this program are to expose the students to leaders who have benefited from leadership programs; to help the students develop their own personal styles of leadership and leadership skills; to provide contact with MSU students who maintain healthy lifestyles; to build a secure support network, and; to acquaint students with leaders from different cultures/backgrounds. In addition to this project, our Freshman Leadership Learning Community participates in environmental, intergenerational, and digital divide activities.

The Emerging Leaders Program

Montclair State University offers an exciting Student Leadership Program for a select group of incoming freshmen.

The Emerging Leaders Program acknowledges students who have made strong contributions in their high schools, their communities, and who show strong potential for leadership within the Montclair State University community.

Community oriented, action, and committed are just a few of the ways to describe the student leaders who are chosen to participate in this program.

Community

Having classes together, participating in team building activities, and attending the Emerging Leaders retreat help foster a sense of community during the first semester of the program.

Action

During the second semester of the program, the Emerging Leaders attend leadership seminars and workshops, and continue to work on community service projects.

Commitment

During their sophomore year, students may serve as mentors to the incoming class of Emerging Leaders.

Throughout the course of the program, students are encouraged to participate in other student leadership opportunities including the Student Government Association, clubs and organizations, and leadership conferences and retreats.
