College life is full of questions.
What courses should I take? When and how do I choose a subject for my undergraduate major or minor? How can I check that I’m on the right track to meet requirements for my major and for graduation? How do I choose the best course schedule for my graduate program?
Sometimes, even just building a manageable schedule can seem overwhelming.
Each MSU student is responsible for tracking his or her own academic progress through WESS, the University’s online enrollment service.
But you will not have to face all those questions alone. MSU assigns each student an advisor to help.
Typically, if you are an Undergraduate student you’ll have one advisor in your first year at MSU, and move on to another advisor once you’ve chosen a major. Graduate students are assigned to a Graduate Program Coordinator from
their chosen program. These Coordinators can help with everything from
course selection to research opportunities and career goals.
We strongly recommend that you make an appointment to see your advisor at least once a semester.
All undeclared undergraduates are assigned to a First Year Counselor, who can help you choose a major.
Specific to Undergraduate Students
Once you have chosen a major, you’ll be assigned an advisor from the faculty of your major’s department in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences (CHSS), the College of Education & Human Services (CEHS), the College of Science & Mathematics (CSAM), the College of the Arts (CART) or the School of Business (SBUS).
Double majors will have an advisor assigned from one of their relevant departments.
Undeclared upper-class and adult students have advisors in the Center for Academic Advising and Adult Learning (CAAAL) until they, too, declare a major and move on to a new advisor in the relevant department.
Students admitted into the Academic Services for Athletes, Educational Opportunity (EOF & PASS), Health Careers or Honors programs are advised by a member of each program’s staff.
