Research Academy Book Discussion Group - Spring 2008

"To begin this study we had to define what we meant by outstanding teachers." Ken Bain, What the Best College Teachers Do. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2004.

Under Discussion: Ken Bain's What the Best College Teachers Do (Harvard University Press: 2004).
What makes a great teacher great? In his book, What the Best College Teachers Do, Ken Bain analyzes 15 years of research studying exceptional teachers--those people who have had enormous success in fostering exceptional student learning. This short book details the common, and uncommon, practices, attitudes, and understandings that engage, challenge, and provoke deep learning among college students. Winner of the 2004 Virginia and Warren Stone Prize for an Outstanding Book on Education and Society, the book has been translated into nine languages and widely discussed around the world. As Publisher's Weekly noted, "Bain's sound and scholarly yet exuberant promotion of America's "best college teachers" abounds with jaunty anecdotes and inspiring opinions that make student -centered instruction look not only infectious but downright imperative." Join us as we read this thought-provoking work and participate in lively discussions of Bain's questions, ideas and findings. Using the book as a springboard, we will use Dr. Bain's findings as a lens to collectively examine the wide-ranging learning environments at Montclair State University. The book and the discussion will interest any self-reflective instructor.
