How can we best foster powerful discussions in which students learn how to think more deeply and critically?  In this seminar we will explore some of the fundamentals of good classroom discussions, engage in some those  basic approaches, and invent other approaches to fit individual classes and disciplines.  Whether you face the same kind of difficulties and struggles with student discussions that most of us encounter or you have mastered the process, we welcome your participation in this seminar.  We hope everyone will emerge from the seminar with a better understanding of why discussions work and why they fail, what we can do to stimulate discussions that are both lively and conducive to student learning, and how we might address specific problems in the discussion classroom.

Facilitator,  Ken Bain, Vice Provost for Instruction, Director, Teaching and Learning Resource Center, and Professor of History.
