Freshman Merit Grants and Need-Based Awards:
To ensure that a Montclair State education remains affordable and accessible, the University takes pride in offering competitive awards to students who exhibit excellence and achievement in the areas of academics, leadership, and community service.
Montclair State University considers a number of criteria when determining eligibility for a Freshman Merit Grant. As such, there is no set combination of criteria that will guarantee an award. In general, the academic records and student profiles of past award recipients have been those that represent significant achievement. To be considered for a Merit Grant, no additional application is necessary. A student's eligibility for a Merit Grant will be based on the materials included with the application for undergraduate admission. Notification of the award will be sent separate from the offer of admission.
Freshman Merit Grants are subject to available funding; therefore, for full consideration, students must submit and complete an application by the December 15 priority deadline. Students who submit and complete applications after this deadline will be considered for Merit Grants on a funds-available basis. Students who complete applications after March 1, 2012 may be ineligible for a Merit Grant.
Freshman Merit Grants are only offered to first-time freshman applicants seeking fall admission to the University and are
non-negotiable.
Additionally, Montclair State University offers many awards based on demonstrated financial need. Since financial need can factor into award eligibility, students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. It is recommended that students complete the FAFSA by the University's March 1 financial aid priority filing deadline. Students qualifying for a need-based financial award will be notified of their award as part of their financial aid package.
