We know the transition to college can be exciting, new—and complex. We are committed to helping you achieve academic and personal success during this transition. Our staff exposes students to the broad range of educational opportunities, and works to integrate new students into the University community.
New Student Orientation enables students to meet other incoming students with the same majors and meet the faculty in their intended fields. There is even a separate track for the parents of incoming students, because we know that college is an adjustment for them too!
Learning Communities, a cluster of 3-4 courses that a group of 10-25 first-year students take together, make it easier for first-year students to form connections with classmates and faculty. Students who have participated in a Learning Community report that it helped them to be more successful in their classes, eased their transition to college, and helped them to form friendships.
Red Hawk Days are a celebration for new students before classes begin. It gives new students a chance to connect and get acclimated to the University.
In order to enrich the first year experience, Fall Frenzy—a month of activities to help students become familiar with all facets of campus life—offers programs that are informational, entertaining, motivating, and inspiring. Fall Frenzy helps students feel at home on the Montclair State campus by acquainting them with the people, offices, departments, and programs of the University.
First Year Counselors advise students on ways to explore their options and to achieve their personal and academic goals. Your First Year Counselor will work with you to clarify your interests and career goals, and to develop a greater awareness of your skills and abilities.
