Technology in the Inclusion Classroom

This framework for mindful consideration of the learning processes, curriculum and classroom environment can be described as Universal Design for Learning, or UDL (Hall, Meyer, & Rose; 2012). Universal Design for Learning is composed of three core principles: ways to present what we learn and teach (“recognition”), options for how we learn (“strategic”), and generate and sustain motivation for why we learn (“affective”).

Technology

Another component of UDL is the integration of technology into curriculum design. Tech tools, such as iPads, iPods and Nook/Kindle e-readers, offer students the opportunity to connect to information in a variety of different ways. What makes technology so vital, particularly in today’s high-tech society, is the flexibility and personalization these tools provide.  Textbooks are limiting in terms of their modification capabilities, so using these digital tools allows for multiple adaptations while retaining content. This allows all students to participate in lessons by using tools that meet their needs.
