Street Smart Self Defense Seminar – February 23, 2012
This seminar teaches a practical and effective method of street-smart self-defense. We utilize training techniques that are geared towards a real world approach that help the student to gain confidence and the tools they need to survive and escape a realistic encounter. In addition to physical techniques, topics discussed and taught are crime prevention issues as well as situational and environmental awareness. The seminar is taught in an open relaxed environment by expert instructors. Get Involved with the Newly Formed LGBT Alumni Network!
In a continuing effort to increase support for the LGBT Center, provide mentorship and networking opportunities, and keep alumni connected and updated about opportunities provided through the LGBT Center, the Office of Alumni Relations has developed an LGBT Alumni Network. This endeavor will provide an opportunity for LGBT and allied alumni to engage with and give back to Montclair State students and show support for the commitment of the University to ensuring equity and social justice for the LGBT community. Montclair State University Teacher Residency Program is a Game Changer
“I know great things can happen when we ignite the spirit of a child,” said Newark Mayor Cory Booker speaking at an event showcasing the achievements of the Newark-Montclair Urban Teacher Residency program on January 25, at the Marion A. Bolden Student Center in Newark. The New York Times featured Montclair State University’s newest student residence complex, The Heights, in an article on public universities increasingly turning to the private sector to build and finance on-campus housing.
"Even before the recession, states found that companies that specialize in student housing could build residence halls more rapidly and cheaply than universities could. They can ease the burden of being a landlord. And perhaps most important, these partnerships free capital for facilities like classrooms and laboratories." [View full details]
Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Laboratory Opens in CSAM
The Microscopy and Microanalysis Research Laboratory (MMRL) is an interdisciplinary research, teaching, and service facility equipped with scanning and transmission electron microscopes, an atomic force microscope, and the ancillary instruments. The facility provides microscopic imaging, X-ray analysis, and specimen preparation services for biological, pharmaceutical, and materials scientific research.
The MMRL consist of four individual microscope rooms, the Histology laboratory, and sample preparation and chemical storage areas. Use of the facility is primarily for University instruction and research at all levels, and clients from other universities, foundations, and industries. [View full details]
Montclair State to Add More Online Courses to its MA in Theatre, Arts Management Concentration Program
Starting fall 2012, Montclair State is planning to launch a substantial number of online courses for its graduate arts-management program. Baseball Great Returns to Campus

Tommy “T-Bone” Giordano, a 1947 graduate of Montclair State University and the current major league scout for the Texas Rangers, put the “history” in Professor Lee Lowenfish’s History of Baseball class when he paid a recent visit to campus and talked to students about his 64-year career in Major League Baseball. Giordano fielded questions on his experiences as a player, manager, and scout and talked about his stint in the majors. [View full details]
2012 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Information
The NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship is coming to Montclair State. The national championship tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20 at Sprague Field. 
It will be the second time that Montclair State will be the host venue for an NCAA Championship. In 2009, Montclair State was the site of the Division III Softball Championship at the MSU Softball Stadium. The 2012 championship will mark the seventh time that the Division III national semifinals and championship game will take place in New Jersey. [View full details]

Keyla Silva ’10
Keyla Silva ’10 is the founder and executive director of Inda Cares, a non-profit organization whose mission and purpose is to enhance self esteem and increase educational, interpersonal, life skills, and recreational opportunities for children from Angola, Africa.
Silva studied Psychology at Montclair State University and says that her involvement with various organizations motivated her to start her non-profit. Silva credits a large part of her inspiration to three affiliations in particular, The Native African Student Organization (NASO), Team Nicaragua, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Back when Montclair State University was still New Jersey State Teachers College at Montclair, Florence Aichele ’33, was a senior at the school, preparing for a profession in teaching.
