Montclair State Celebrates 60th Anniversary of Historic Educational Telecasts

On April 30, 1952, Montclair State University—then the Montclair State Teachers College—made television history. According to documents prepared at the time, Montclair State was “undoubtedly the first” to use a non-commercial Ultra High Frequency, or UHF, channel to broadcast a full day of educational telecasts to schools. “The broadcast showed that there was a great potential for bringing a different kind of education to children,” said Maxine Minkowitz Soren ’54, a speech major who was one of 29 students who developed and produced the programs. PharmFest 2012 Alumni Panel: Career Success in the Changing Pharma Industry

At this year's PharmFest - "The Changing Landscape", the day was concluded with a panel discussion entitled "Career Success in the Changing Pharma Industry" where four alumni leaders in the pharmaceutical industry spoke on the subject. The panel was moderated by Carolyn D. Jones, Executive Director, Center for Career Services and Cooperative Education. Good afternoon. It is a pleasure to be with you on this wonderful spring day to take a few moments to reflect on the accomplishments and challenges of this past academic year. Throughout the year, during the miniscule interstices of time between my various responsibilities, very often at about 3:00 a.m. when I can’t sleep, I take the opportunity to read. Montclair State University Announces New Dean of the College of the Arts

Montclair State University has appointed Daniel Gurskis to be the new dean of its College of the Arts, one of the University’s six colleges and schools. The College of the Arts is home to the University’s John J. Cali School of Music, the newly established School of Communication and Media, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Art and Design. Gurskis comes to Montclair State from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York where he is a professor and chair of the Department of Film and a special assistant to the president. Most recently at Brooklyn College, he has overseen the creation of a new graduate school of cinema to be located at Steiner Studios, the largest film and television production facility outside of Los Angeles. In addition to his academic experience, Gurskis has held creative and management positions in film, television, theatre, and advertising, and he has performed pro bono work in arts management. Montclair State University Announces New Dean of the College of Education and Human Services

Montclair State University has appointed Francine P. Peterman as the new dean of its College of Education and Human Services. Peterman joins Montclair State from Queens College of the City University of New York, where she was a professor and dean of education. “We are delighted to announce Francine Peterman’s appointment,” said Montclair State University President Susan A. Cole. “She is a dedicated educator and an able and creative administrator whose leadership will continue to advance the College of Education and Human Services’ core commitment to educational excellence. Conrad J. Schmitt Hall Dedication

With more than 150 family members, friends, former classmates, and guests in attendance, Montclair State University alumnus and benefactor Conrad J. Schmitt ’58 cut the ribbon to officially dedicate the newly renovated Conrad J. Schmitt Hall, at a special ceremony on April 19. The new home of the departments of Spanish and Italian, Linguistics, and Modern Languages and Literatures; the Language Testing and Technology labs; and the Red Hawk Math Learning Center (aka “math emporium”); Schmitt Hall was named in honor of Schmitt in recognition of his generous bequest to the University. John Pascal '08 MA: “I Am Grateful to Montclair State”

John Pascal ’08 MA credits his Master’s Degree from Montclair State with helping him to be a better teacher and for professional acclaim and success as awriter and lecturer. His Master’s thesis onArtemus Ward, arguably the first humorist in the United States with a national reputation and a strong influence on Mark Twain, was published as a book, and he lectures nationally on the topic. John earned his Master’s Degree in English with a concentration in American Literature from Montclair State in 2008. [View full details]

Athletics

NCAA Division III Lacrosse Tournament

The NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship is coming to Montclair State University. The national championship tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 19-20 at Sprague Field. It will be the second time that Montclair State will be the host venue for an NCAA Championship. In 2009, Montclair was the site of the Division III Softball Championship at the MSU Softball Stadium. The 2012 championship will mark the seventh time that the Division III national semifinals and championship game will take place in New Jersey. [View full details]

Chad Faulcon Signs with NFL's Atlanta Falcons as Undrafted Free Agent

Faulcon is now a Falcon! Senior safety Chad Faulcon (Cranford, NJ) signed as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons following the National Football League’s Draft on Saturday, April 28. Faulcon becomes the fifth Red Hawk to sign a professional contract since 2000 and the fourth with an NFL organization. The signing caps off an amazing year for Faulcon, who was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference and D3Football.com East Region Defensive Player of the Year. He was also chosen to the D3Football.com All-America Team. A two-time NJAC Defensive Player of the Week selection, Faulcon registered 72 tackles and three interceptions for the NJAC runner-up Red Hawks in 2011 as Montclair went 8-2 overall, 7-2 in the league. He also helped MSU to back-to-back NJAC Championships and NCAA Division III Playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010. [View full details]

1987 Baseball National Championship 25th Anniversary Reunion

On April 28, the Montclair State Department of Athletics and baseball program celebrated the 25th Anniversary of its 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship Team. Eighteen members from that squad made their way back to Montclair State, including assistant coaches Rich O'Connor and Rick Giancola and the head coach Kevin Cooney. The team members who were honored in a private ceremony inside the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center prior to the game. [View full details]

Marcella “Marcy” LoCastro, CPA.CITP, Class of ’74 is the CEO of MLoCastro Consulting LLC and provides Women’s Leadership Training and Coaching for companies. LoCastro currently serves on the BioClinica, Inc.(NASDAQ:BIOC) Board and Audit Committee, the Immunomedics, Inc. (NASDAQ:IMMU) Board, Audit and Compensation Committees, an Industry Advisory Board as a Senior Advisor for Alvarez & Marsal, Montclair State University Foundation Audit Committee Member and School of Business Board, Executive Women of NJ Board and NJSCPA Magazine Editorial Board. With over 35 years of experience on Boards and working with CEOS, CFOs, and countless professional organizations, LoCastro has many accomplishments under her belt. Chris Cancialosi '02 MA

Chris Cancialosi ’02 MA is more than just a master’s degree alumnus. He is a former adjunct professor, Iraq war veteran, and entrepreneur. Chris is the founder of gothamCULTURE, a leadership and organizational development consultancy. Currently living and working bi-coastally, Chris recently came back to campus for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences’ Dean’s Recognition Awards, at which he was honored. Cancialosi says that the Psychology program gave him a solid base to go out into the job market and land his first job. “The program really gives you the foundation to help you get launched – it provides tremendously helpful, practical experience as opposed to a purely academic curriculum.” [View full details]
