Physician Alumni Network
A number of enrolled students in the College of Science and Mathematics express an interest in a career in the medical field. We want Montclair State pre-med students to know that they are not alone in their path to success. Alumni who know the landscape of the healthcare profession can help our students understand the journey to reaching medical school and the many career options available as a healthcare professional. We are seeking Montclair State medical alumni to assist our students by providing input on how to navigate into the medical field and networking assistance and guidance on admission to medical professional schools.
Kirsten Monsen-Collar is Pre-Med Advisor and Undergraduate/Graduate Coordinator for Molecular Biology students. Her main objectives include meeting with students regarding their options after graduation, and preparing them for the future. Those options often include medical or dental school.
“Many of our students are unsure of the process and sacrifices they would be making if they choose to go to medical school”, notes Kirsten. “They do not know how to apply, what the standards for acceptance are, what sort of extracurricular activities they should be in to make them stand out, the timing, and planning that go into simply applying for medical school,” she adds.
“In some instances, it’s too late,” says Kirsten. “Seniors come in and decide they want to go to medical school. While we never discourage a student, we do inform them that really, the steps to make yourself competitive need to start when you first get here.” In circumstances like these, the students are still encouraged to pursue medicine, but are also urged to come up with other options in the field, and are reminded that there will be some challenges along the way.
Advisors and faculty get the word out, and the more outreach to current students, the better. That is why we are looking for physician alumni to assist with this outreach. Hearing actual accounts of how many hours were spent preparing for and applying to medical school, studying for the MCAT, in school, and in a residency position from alumni who have experienced it first-hand is a great resource for students who are considering the same path.
Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics, Dr. Robert Prezant, welcomes the opportunity for alumni mentorship to students:
“With a growing need for health career professionals, including a serious need for well-trained physicians, it is important that our College be able to share the best information from the best sources on how to enter and succeed in the health care industry. With a roundtable discussion of our physician alumni, doctors who have a Montclair State grounding and a wealth of experience in the field, we bring the best resource to bear on helping us understand the most successful path for our students to become tomorrow's physician leaders.”
