50th, 55th, and 50+ Reunion Celebrations
Celebrating the Classes of 1963, 1958, and earlier
Members of the classes of 1963, 1958, and members of earlier classes (50+) returned to campus on Friday, May 24, for the annual reunion celebration and luncheon. Alumni traveled from as far as Germany and Hong Kong to commemorate the occasion. The events of the day provided opportunities for alumni to participate in the University’s 2013 Commencement exercises where 4,320 degrees were conferred. They visited with former classmates and renewed old friendships, reminisced, and toured campus to experience the exciting changes that have taken place at Montclair State University since their student days. If you were unable to join us, we hope you plan to come and celebrate with us next May.
The Class of 1963 50th reunion was led by a committee that included John Camp '63, '67 MA; Dorothy "Daniela" Gioseffi '63; Florence Perna Labenski '63, '81 MA; and Gerald "Jerry" Labenski '63, '71 MA. In her remarks, Daniela greeted her former classmates:
"It is wonderful for us to see each other here again! You might not have recognized it, but this is the same campus where we spent our college years from 1959-63. At first, we might not have known each others' faces, as time brings change, but the blessing is, we’re here together after 50 years!"
Rosann Kao '63 traveled approximately 10,000 miles from Hong Kong to attend the event, along with her sister, Jane Alcoff '64, who will serve on the reunion committee for next year's Class of 1964 50th Reunion. James Clark '63 traveled 3,994 miles from Germany to reunite with former classmates.
Highlights of the luncheon included the reunion of a quartet, the Quadeltas, who serenaded the crowd and received a standing ovation. The group includes Ken Villani '63 - Tenor, James "Jim" Clark '63 - Lead, Rick Hartung '63 - Baritone, and Bob Dey '62 - Bass.
Patricia Mizerek '63 was thankful for the opportunity to reunite with her former classmates. "Thanks for making it a memorable occasion in our lives. I wish that more of our classmates were able to experience such an occasion. The "Panzer group "was always a tight knit group. Maybe it was because we spent so much time together in the gym, locker room, on sports teams, and practicing for Department Demonstrations."
"We had a great time. Thanks for the many opportunities to catch up with classmates," said Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Ken Wolff '63 and Dorothy Deremer Wolff '63.
Committee members of the Class of 1958 participated greatly in recruiting their friends and former classmates. Maryann Bond Doherty '58, Jacqueline Witulski Fusek '58, Joan Markowsky Holmes '58, William "Bill" Liess '58, Guna Spechts Mazzitelle '58, Nancy Elting Plant '58, Arasky "Roxy" Akillian Polo '58 and Lois Schantz Sullivan '58 were all active members of the committee. Committee co-chair, Maryann Bond Doherty '58, ended her remarks with this message to her fellow alumni: "May we all enjoy good health, happy days and look forward to seeing each other again at a future gathering of the 50+ group."
Reverend Dr. Audrey Vincentz Leef '43 received a Distinguished Alumna Award in recognition of her 70 years of generosity, dedication and support of the University. She gave touching remarks that brought tears to the eyes of many in attendance, talking about her connection to the University over those 70 years and how she feels as if she never truly left.
