When I applied to Montclair State in 2008, I had no idea that my grandfather’s mother had been a student at the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair, as it was called when it opened its doors in 1908. Yet I felt something drawing me here. Now I believe that my great grandmother’s spirit came alive within me when I began studying at the same school she attended 93 years ago. As I follow in her footsteps three generations later, I am grateful for the road she paved for me as a strong, educated woman.

This spring, as I prepare to graduate, I feel comfort in knowing that my great grandmother Louise once stood in my shoes. I feel that I am striving not only for myself, but for something larger—to continue the legacy she passed down to me, and that I will one day pass to my children and my children’s children.
