50th Reunion Class Celebrates Anniversary

Members of the Class of 1958 celebrated their 50th anniversary
last month in style. They began their celebration with an
upscale cocktail party on May 22 in the University Hall
Conference Center. The next day, members of the Class of ‘58
were honored at Montclair State's Centennial Commencement. The
reunion class led the special ceremony wearing academic caps and
gowns and the "official" golden anniversary sash. Following
Commencement, the Class of 1958 had a chance to relax and
reminisce at a luncheon in their honor.
Official Centennial History Book Published
The
history of how the fastest growing University in New Jersey
began and developed to its current centennial year is told in
the newly-published Montclair State University, A Century of
Triumph Over Circumstance written by Joseph Thomas Moore,
noted historian, scholar and Professor Emeritus of History and
Social Studies Education, who retired from the University in
2005 after a 39-year career. Two years in the making,
the book chronicles the University’s history from its founding
in 1908 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Montclair with
one building and eight faculty members surrounded by an open,
grassy field, to the current-day 246-acre campus which will
begin the upcoming fall semester with 530 full-time faculty
members and almost 17,000 students - the second largest
University in New Jersey.
A special reception and
book-signing event launching Montclair State University, A
Century of Triumph Over Circumstance took place on Tues.,
May 13 in the Alexander Kasser Theater. Moore was on hand to
discuss the context of the founding of the University with
frequent New York Times Contributor and author of
America 1908, Jim Rasenberger, and author and Montclair
State University Distinguished Visiting Professor Neil Baldwin,
The American Revelation: Ten Ideals That Shaped America from
the Puritans to the Cold War.
