Montclair State Kicks off
Year with Red Hawk Day

Kicking off Montclair
State’s second century, first-year and transfer students joined
President Susan A. Cole, faculty and staff on September 2 to
celebrate Red Hawk Day 2008. Continuing the tradition reinstated
last year, Red Hawk Day featured a community picnic,
convocation, a carnival and workshops for the new students.
Immediately following President
Cole’s Opening Day Address to the University community at the
Kasser Theater, faculty and staff joined the students—who wore
T-shirts with the colors of their college or school—to process
to the Student Center Quad for a community picnic.
The
First-Year and Transfer Student Convocation at the Amphitheater
followed, with entertainment by the Red Hawk Cheerleaders and
remarks by President Cole, Milton Fuentes, associate professor
of psychology, James Wassel ’73 ’78 M.A., president of the
Montclair State University Alumni Association, SGA president Ron
Chicken and Michelle Kasper, president of Alpha Lambda Delta,
the National Honor Society for First Year Students. Red Hawk Day
continued with the Fall Frenzy Carnival at the Student
Recreation Center and other activities around the campus.

Education for Action: Montclair State
in Nicaragua

Motivated by a desire
to create change in their communities and the world, 13
Montclair State students recently traveled to Nicaragua on a
10-day educational mission to learn about the political,
social and economic conditions there, and about the impact
that U.S. policies and businesses have on developing
nations.
Led by Jhon Velasco, director
of Montclair State’s Center for Non-Violence and Prevention
Programs (CNVPP)
and the Reverend Ann Ralosky, Protestant Chaplain for Campus
Ministry, the delegation visited hospitals, factories and
schools and met with Nicaraguan economists,
environmentalists and community leaders among others. The
itinerary also included a trip to a nature reserve and a
two-night home stay with local families in a rural northern
community.
With a theme of “Education
for Action,” the focus of the mission was to help the
delegation understand the conditions in Nicaragua and other
developing nation—and the underlying policies and forces
that sustain them-—so that upon returning, the students
could take action to create change. The change is already
underway with some of the students working towards assuring
that imported products sold on campus are fair trade
products and other students are developing a lecture series
to present to the University community.
Call for Artists: George Segal Gallery presents
Art
Connections 5

Montclair State University’s George Segal Gallery is once
again sponsoring Art Connections, its annual
fund-raising art exhibit, from January 15 to February 15,
2009, and invites artists to submit works for display and
sale. Now in its fifth year, Art Connections has
grown from a regional exhibit to one of national scope and
offers artists an excellent opportunity for exposure and
sales of their works.
Past Art Connections
exhibits have featured works by noted artists such as
ceramist Toshiko Takaeshu; painters Julie Hefferman, Bisa
Washington, Ben Jones and Cora Cohen; and sculptor Willie
Cole. Proceeds from the event support exhibitions at the
George Segal Gallery and care of the University’s permanent
collection.
The deadline for submissions is
September 16 and an online brochure with
full information about the event as well as entry procedures and
requirements is available
here. Information about the George
Segal Gallery is available
here.

"George Segal:
Modernist Humanist" to Open Sept. 9
Sculptor George Segal created his art out of
life's ordinary moments: waiting for a bus,
drinking coffee in a diner, listening to the
radio. Segal's ghostly plaster-cast human
replicas are cognitively complex, modernist,
and formally intricate, while at the same
time, humanly profound. This
exhibit includes works from the collections
of the George and Helen Segal Foundation,
Carroll Janis, Inc., the Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American
Art. Curated by internationally renowned art
critic Donald Kuspit. Through December 11.
