Janet Echelman: Sculptor, Public Art.
As a sculptor, Echelman’s work infuses public spaces with humanity, history, shape, texture, color. She believes that infrastructure need not be nondescript. “If we can transform the anonymous spaces which bombard us on a daily basis, we can avoid the cumulative deadening effect and become more alive.” Echelman’s calling is the work of this transformation, taking the ordinary interstitial spaces of daily life and infusing them with specificity, idiosyncracy, character. Whenever possible, she seeks to literally breathe life into a place, shaping materials in ways that respond to and act in unison with the physical environment.
