7:00-9:00 LORNA SIMPSON: photography and video.
Lorna Simpson was born in Brooklyn, New York, and received her BFA in Photography from the School of Visual Arts, New York, and her MFA from the University of California, San Diego. Lorna Simpson first became well-known in the mid-1980s for her works that confront and challenge narrow, conventional views of gender, identity, culture, history and memory. More recently, she has turned to moving images – in film and video works such as Call Waiting. Her newest body of work also includes drawings based on the characters in a recent video work constructed from found film footage. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Miami Art Museum; and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin. She has participated in such important international exhibitions as the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany. Simpson's first mid-career survey was exhibited at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Miami Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, and the Gibbes Museum in South Carolina. lsimpsonstudio.com
