The Department of Art & Design helps students prepare for lives as artists by providing a wide range of professional development activities . The Online Resource Links further connect students with museums, organizations, internship opportunities and career/job resources.

Professional Development Activities

Visiting Artists' Workshops bring well-known artists to the campus to provide master studio workshops. Past artists have included painter Louisa Chase and photographer Ilse Bing.

Art Forum, a weekly lecture series, features distinguished artists, designers, critics and curators who illuminate and discuss their own career paths within the broader context of careers in the visual arts.

Art & Design Student Organizations such as the Montclair State Art Educator's Club and student-run Gallery 3-1/2 committee provide opportunities for collaboration and student exposure.

Gallery And Museum Visits to New York (30 minutes from campus by bus or train), as well as to Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., give access to some of the most important art works and art viewing experiences in the world.

Exhibition Opportunitiesinclude those for students, faculty and other professionals whose works are exhibited in MSU's George Segal Gallery; as well as a group exhibition of student work in Manhattan's renowned gallery district.

MSU's international programs for students provide global exposure and cultural immersion experiences.

Studio Assistantships are available for qualified students to work in areas related to their creative interests while at the same time pursuing their studies. Graduate assistants receive a tuition and University-wide fee remission for up to 24 graduate credits per academic year and a stipend for the full 10 month appointment.
