Professional Development & Career Resources

The Department of Broadcasting helps students prepare for careers in the industry through production experience, practical internships and a host of enrichment activities.   Students build their resumes from freshman year and graduate with skills applicable not only to broadcasting but to many other professions.

Through Special Projects, students have the opportunity to work on client-based initiatives where skills and talent are put to practical use.  Past clients have included the NJ Division of Youth and Family Services, the SIDS Center of NJ and Advocates for Bayonne Children.

Department Internships, Externships and Cooperative Education offer practical apprenticeships with network and cable stations, production houses and independent projects.

The department's Television Production Company offers the opportunity to participate in a heavy production schedule for the taping of Carpe Diem, a weekly program that airs on Comcast and Cablevision.
As TPC crew members, students experience demands typical of producing a weekly TV show as professionals, assuming roles as director, talent coordinator, editor, camera operator, among others.

Professionals in the field participate in Visiting Artists' Workshops, , which are offered as one-credit courses in specialized areas, such as "Interviewing Skills" with Steve Adubato and "News" with CBS News Director Diane Doctor.

Many students join American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT), an organization that promotes the impact of women in electronic media and allied fields by educating, advocating and acting as a resource to its members and the industry.

Apart from programs in the Department of Broadcasting, MSU's international programs for students provide global exposure and cultural immersion that complement studies and provide content for video documentation.

MSU Career Services
provides help with job searching, resume writing and interview preparation.  The department's own  list of career resources & links provides an added tool for networking and job search.

Alumni of the Department of Broadcasting go on to make names for themselves and mentor our graduates on their own paths to success.  Through internships, guest lecturing and creating opportunities for our students, Broadcasting alums are a positive force in helping to shape the careers and lives of our future alums.
