Applicant Instructions


Applying for admission to Communication Studies is a Three-Step process:

Step One - Complete and submit a university application to the MSU  Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Students are encouraged to apply online.

     - Freshmen and Transfer Students will receive notification via email from the Office of Admission advising them of their admission status.  If accepted, you will be directed to the Department of Communication Studies admission guidelines. 


    -Current MSU students seeking to change their existing major to Communication Studies need not re-apply to the university but instead should submit a portfolio directly to the Department (See Step 2 below).

 
Step Two Submit to the Department of Communication Studies (Life Hall, Suite 050) a completed portfolio on the submission dates listed.  Applicants who have a conflict with a specific submission date may contact the Department of Communication Studies to discuss alternatives.

 

Portfolio to Include:

1.      Application Form (download and complete)

2.      Resume

3.      Letters of recommendation (2 minimum)

4.      A photocopy of your recent cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA requirement for admission to the department is 2.75) or a photocopy of your high school or college transcript.

5.      A 200-word typed statement that demonstrates your understanding of the discipline of communication and how your choice of concentration relates to your future career goals. (You are are strongly advised to consult the Department’s web pages and reference the overall program of study for majors as well as the required coursework for the chosen concentration in your statement).

Incomplete portfolios will not be accepted by the department

Step Three –  Contact the Department of Communication Studies to indicate date/time for submission of portfolio.  On the day the portfolio is submitted, you will be asked to complete an in-house writing sample lasting approximately 45 minutes.

Communications Studies Application Deadlines

Deadlines for portfolio submission for the academic year 2007-2008 are as follows:

For January 2008 admission:

  • October 1st
  • December 3rd
  • January  4th

For September 2008 admission:

  • January  4th
  • March 3rd
  • May 1st
  • June 11th
  • August 4th

Following the review of your portfolio, the Department will notify you via email regarding the admission decision. 

Freshmen and Transfer Students - The Department will also forward its recommendation  to the Admissions Office, which in turn will notify you  of your status (normally within two weeks of portfolio submission). 

Current MSU Students – After receiving the email from the Department of Communication Studies, please contact the office to set an appointment for academic advising.


Communication Studies Information Sessions

Your application may be strengthened if you attend one of the University's Open House programs where you can learn more about the university and College of the Arts as well as attend an information session on Communcation Studies.  Information may be found on CART's Come Visit/Events webpage.
