Applicant Instructions


The following instructions apply to potential Freshmen, Transfer applicants, as well as currently enrolled MSU students seeking a Major/Minor in Communication Studies.

We would strongly suggest that you review the coursework offered by the Department of Communication Studies before completing the Interview Registration Form.

Freshman Applicants

  • Applicants must complete the university's online application as a first step toward university admission.
  • After application submission, applicants may receive an email invitation to request an appointment with the Department of Communication Studies.
  • Appointments are arranged via the STUDENT APPOINTMENT SCHEDULER (a link will be provided in the email invitation.) In scheduling the appointment, applicants will be asked to indicate their intended concentration and provide the following information:
    • Your participation in high school activities
    • Job experience, if applicable
    • Brief essay describing how you feel the Communication Studies coursework will support your career goals.
  • On the day of the scheduled appointment, applicants will be asked to complete an on-site writing sample, having approx. 45 minutes to complete this task. Questions related to the program may be asked during the meeting.

Transfer Applicants
Complete the university's online application as a first step toward university admission. (Please note that a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required of transfers for admission to the programs.)

  • After application submission, applicants may receive an email invitation to request an appointment with the Department of Communication Studies.
  • Appointments are arranged via the STUDENT APPOINTMENT SCHEDULER (a link will be provided in the email invitation.) In scheduling the appointment, applicants will be asked to indicate their intended concentration and provide the following information:
    • Description of campus activities or organizations you currently support
    • Job experience, if applicable
    • Brief essay describing how you feel the Communication Studies coursework will support your career goals.
  • On the day of the scheduled appointment, please bring a photocopy of your most recent college transcript. Applicants will be asked to complete an on-site writing sample, having approx. 45 minutes to complete this task. Questions related to the program may be asked during the meeting.

Current MSU Students

  • Students already enrolled at Montclair State University who wish to change their existing Major or to add a Minor in Communication Studies will need to meet the minimum requirement of a 2.75 GPA.  It is recommended that an applicant review the coursework and determine their area of interest within the Major. 
  • Following this step, qualified applicants will be directed to complete an online application and request an appointment with the Department of Communication Studies.
  • Appointments are arranged via the STUDENT APPOINTMENT SCHEDULER (a link will be provided by the department.) In scheduling the appointment, applicants will be asked to indicate their intended concentration and provide the following information:
    • Description of campus activities or organizations you currently support.
    • Job experience, if applicable
    • Brief essay describing how you feel the Communication Studies coursework will support your career goals.
  • Please bring a photocopy of your "Unofficial Transcript" printed from WESS to the Interview appointment. You are encouraged to ask any questions you may have regarding the program.  Be prepared to discuss your reasons for choosing the specific concentration, as your knowledge of the coursework to be undertaken is assessed as well as your verbal skills in communicating your goals.

 

Appointment Follow-up

At the end of your interview, you will be advised if you have been accepted into the Department of Communication Studies.  Appropriate forms for the declaration of a Major/Minor will be submitted by the Department Administrator, to either the MSU Admissions Office or the Center for Academic Advising for processing.

During the Admissions process, we will guide you on a course schedule for your first semester in the Department. You will then be assigned an Advisor in the Department who you will meet with each semester before registering for your classes for the next semester.  Our objective is to assist you in achieving academic success and meeting your educational goals.

Communication Studies Information Sessions

To learn more about Montclair State University and the Department of Communication Studies, applicants are encouraged to attend one of MSU?s Open House programs and attend a Communication Studies Information Session. (The more you know about the program the more your application may be strengthened.) Information may be found on the college?s Events page.

 The Department of Communication Studies has a rolling admission policy.

Since admission to these programs is highly competitive, students are strongly urged to complete applications and schedule interview appointments for the earliest possible dates.

If you are seeking to be admitted for the Spring 2010 term, you should schedule your interview by November 1, 2009.
