National Goals

LPH was founded, in essence, to support a range of goals and connectedness in the field, including to:

  1. Recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies
  2. Stimulate interest in the field of communication
  3. Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors
  4. Provide opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication
  5. Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students
  6. Explore options for graduate education in communication studies

At Montclair State University, the Zeta Chapter of LPH works hard to promote interaction and camaraderie among students in the major, as well as to raise money for scholarships and for both educational and social events. It also serves as a liaison between students and professionals in the corporate world of communication through career fairs and conferences.

The executive board of LPH holds weekly meetings to discuss and plan upcoming events, fundraisers, scholarships and any other ideas relating to the organization.

Executive board positions include president, vice-president of programming, vice-president of public relations, secretary, treasurer, scholarship officer and member at large.

Programs and Events

LPH is an organization that is responsible for creating and running several programs throughout the academic year.  These programs include not only social functions, but also programs with educational themes.  The following programs, except for the Communication Studies Banquet in April of the spring semester, are free to the students.

Fundraising Events

In order to facilitate the various programs throughout the academic year, LPH as a nonprofit organization is responsible for raising money to fund its programs. Following are examples of various types of fundraisers that LPH holds.

  • Bake Sales  Students can look for a good old-fashioned bake sale at least once a month.  Items for the bake sale are provided by students within the Communication Studies Major.
  • 50/50  Tickets may be purchased for a specified amount of money from any LPH member.  Upon drawing, winner takes home half of the money received.
  • Bulk Candy Sale  Very similar to a bake sale, but with a twist.  Small candy is placed in bags.  Students select from different types of candy and pay by the number of scoops.

Educational and Social Programs

LPH presents and/or supports a variety of educational and social programs, including:

  • Motivational Speakers  LPH had the privilege of presenting Dr. Rob Gilbert, a nationally know speaker, to the students.  More than 120 students attended the event.
  • Career Nights  At least once every semester LPH hosts a career night in which people who work professionally in the field of communication speak to students about their experiences and then conduct Q & A sessions. In the past, LPH has brought in professionals who work in public relations, marketing, human resources, consulting and many other fields. Many of the speakers are Alumni of the Department of Communication Studies
  • Movie Night  In the past, LPH has hosted movie nights.  After showing the movie, a member of the Communication Studies faculty serves as a moderator and engages the audience in a discussion of the movie and its related themes of communication.
  • Welcome Back Party  Students are invited to a party sponsored by the Executive Board of LPH to celebrate the beginning of the school year and meet the new students joining the department.
  • Holiday Party  For many years students have met at the LPH advisor's home for a holiday party.  Events of the night include a viewing of the nonverbal music videos, exchanging white elephant gifts and enjoying food of the season. The size of LPH membership has outgrown the use of Dr. Bond's home. The party is now being held at a larger venue.
  • Communication Studies Banquet  This is the largest event hosted by LPH.  Every April, LPH hosts a formal dinner/awards night. New members are inducted and others receive scholarship and other recognitions.  The dinner is open to ALL communication studies majors and their families .  It is a great night of dining and dancing.

These are just a few of the events that LPH presents to the students of the Communication Studies major.  For more information, check the Announcement section of this site or call Communication Studies office, 973.6557472.

Testimonials

The department is so close. A majority of my friends are also fellow classmates. The professors are so personable and the material is relevant. I'm proud of my department. Becoming a member of LPH has allowed me to give back to a department that has given me so much. Thanks everyone for everything. Good luck in the future.

I've always had an out going personality so majoring in Communication was a natural fit for me. However as a part-time student I'm really happy I chose to complete my degree at MSU because the faculty and staff were really accommodating. I also enjoyed being a part of LPH. It allowed me to get to know some great classmates and had a ball helping put together the department's events. Much success to the class of 2005!!!

I love the communication department at Montclair because it is so close knit.  The professors are always so helpful, and the students are given the chance to interact more personally.  I love being a part of LPH too; planning events and raising money for the department is so exciting, and we always have so much fun!
