Overview of Programs

The Department of Theatre & Dance offers a Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and/or minors in Theatre Studies, Acting, Musical Theatre, Production/Design and Dance.
The program affords the type of pre-professional training most often associated with a conservatory, while providing the benefits of a liberal arts education. Graduates are prepared as performers, designers and technicians as well as for careers in related performing arts fields.

The BA in Theatre Studies is for students interested in exploring all aspects of theatre, including performacne, within the context of a broad, liberal arts experience, whereas the more discipline-intensive BFA in Acting and BFA in Dance  are for students aspiring to become performers. The BFA in Musical Theatre is an ideal choice for performers talented in theater, dance and music; those more interested in the backstage and technical aspects of theater select the BFA in Production/Design . In addition to the majors, the Department of Theatre & Dance offers minors in dance, theatre, and musical theatre for students who want to cultivate their interests without majoring in the disciplines.

The Theatre program at Montclair State University is fully accredited by NAST (the National Association of Schools of Theatre), distinguishing it among programs regionally as well as nationally.
