Applicant Instructions


Applying for admission to Theatre & Dance is a two-step process:

Step One - Complete the university's online application for general admission consideration.

Step Two - After application submission, applicants may be invited to a department interview, audition or portfolio review . The review process is generally a give-and-take experience where students are encouraged to discuss their education and career goals in addition to demonstrating their artistic ability.


Applicants should review guidelines specific to their major or concentration:

2009-2010 Interviews, Auditions and Portfolio Reviews will take place on the dates listed below.  Since admission to these programs is highly competitive, students are strongly urged to complete admission applications and schedule appointments for the earliest possible dates. (Intended freshman should do so for no later than March.)

You can now audition for Montclair State University regionally through attendance at the National Unified Auditions. Auditions can be selected through the on-line Audition Application form after you have applied to the university,  and are processed in the order that they are received. At the conclusion of the interview, audition or portfolio review the Department forwards its recommendations to the Admissions Office , which in turn notifies students of their overall status, normally within three weeks. (Note: In some cases applicants may be placed on a waiting list.) Applicants are encouraged to schedule their appointment for the earliest possible date. Since admission to these programs is highly competitive, students are strongly urged to complete applications and schedule appointments for the earliest possible dates. (Intended freshman should do so for no later than March.)

Note to MSU students already enrolled at MSU:
  Students wanting to change majors to a theatre or dance program need not re-apply to the university but instead should contact the Department directly to schedule their interview, audition or portfolio appointment.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Applicants to the Department of Theatre & Dance may qualify for one of the scholarships available to incoming university students.
