NJ News Commons to Host Three-Day Training Program for New Jersey News Publishers
Community Journalism Executive Training program teaches executives to think more entrepreneurally
Developed by Rusty and Janet Coats of the media consulting firm Coats2Coats, CJET is a practical workshop in which publishers develop a business plan in an effort to reach their financial goals. Participants learn from both peers and experienced business consultants. Executives from the 19 participating organizations – including The Alternative Press, Jersey Shore Hurricane News, NJ Spotlight and Morristown Green – will finish the program with a 100-day action plan tailored to their specific business needs.
“CJET is one of a series of training programs that we are planning as part of our goal to serve the New Jersey news ecosystem,” said Debra Galant, Director of the NJ News Commons. “Today’s ecosystem is comprised of many new players and we want to make sure that they have the tools that they need to be sustainable. As someone who has attended a CJET program, I am excited that we will be hosting it at Montclair State University – it is a perfect fit for the overall goals of the Center for Cooperative Media.”
CJET builds off of two earlier business development programs for community news publishers, including Super Camp, a pilot program that grew out of the Block by Block Community News Summit. The inaugural CJET class was launched in October 2012 by the Knight Foundation, the Investigative News Network, The Patterson Foundation and the Knight Digital Media Center.
