Curtain Call Awards

Presented by: The Metropolitan Opera Guild & Montclair State University

As part of its educational mission, the Metropolitan Opera Guild takes an active interest in supporting and encouraging the development of young operatic talent. The Guild facilitates master classes for high-school students; presents public master classes, audition workshops, and other seminars targeted toward college- and conservatory-age singers; and, each year, bestows the Alton E. Peters Award upon one of the Grand Finalists of the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions. With the Curtain Call Awards, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, in conjunction with the music faculty of Montclair State University, reaches out to high schools across New Jersey to recognize promising juniors and seniors and help them on their path to artistic success.

Applicants will submit a video (on DVD or Video CD) of the applicant performing an aria or art song, chosen to display the applicant’s abilities and level of development. (See application below for details.) Entries will be reviewed by a panel of music education professionals, from which five finalists will be chosen. Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Vocal Technique: Demonstrates technical mastery (including phrasing, diction, intonation, dynamics, and tonal quality).
  • Presentation: Delivers a confident, expressive, stylistically informed performance.

All finalists will perform at a concert at the Jed Leshowitz Recital Hall on June 5, 2010, at Montclair State University, from which one grand-prize winner will be selected by a triumvirate of expert judges. All finalists will also win the chance to attend with his/her teacher a select final dress rehearsal at the Metropolitan Opera during the 2010-11 season (subject to availability) and two passes for a backstage tour of the Metropolitan Opera House.

The grand-prize winner will receive a photo and mention in OPERA NEWS magazine, an opportunity to attend with his/her teacher a select evening performance at the Metropolitan Opera during the 2010-11 season (subject to availability), and a complimentary private voice lesson with one of MSU’s music faculty members.
