Department of Theatre and Dance ------- Spring 2012

ON THE MOVE

Chair’s Corner –
Welcome from Department Chair Randy Mugleston

Welcome to our spring 2012 newsletter.

This spring's production season includes Shakespeare's timeless classic, Romeo and Juliet, the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, our co-production with the John J. Cali School of Music
.

Meanwhile, Theatre on the Move, our fall-debuted department touring company, is continuing to bring socially relevant theatrical performances to high schools around the state and providing our students the opportunity to hone their craft off campus. The company’s first production was an original play written by alumnus Ben Clawson ’07, entitled Tuesdays, about four New Jersey high school students who watch the tragic events of September 11, 2001 unfold on a television set in their school’s senior lounge. More news on our academic programs... I'm excited to announce that, starting next fall, our Arts Management master's degree program will offer more online courses -- a significant step towards the program becoming fully online. The program addresses all facets of the business of running an arts-related organization including laws and regulations involving contracts and unions, marketing plans, budgets, applications for grants and proposal writing, as well as advocating for the arts at local and national levels.  Montclair's program is the only one in the state that is housed in its College of the Arts.  Read the full article.

In our Dance division, dance majors bring their fresh and innovative choreography to the stage in Dance Collage 2012 and Danceworks 2012. Rounding out the season is The Adaptation Project, created in collaboration with, and performed by, the BA Theatre Studies class of 2012. This world-premiere ensemble-based theatre piece promises to be a unique and innovative event.

For these and othe reasons, Spring is an exciting semester in the Department of Theatre and Dance.

Montclair State to Present the NJ Premiere of 8

A one-night-only staged reading of 8, the powerful play about the federal district court trial contesting the Proposition 8 voter ban in 2008 on same sex marriages in California, will have its New Jersey premiere at Montclair State University on Saturday, March 24 at the L. Howard Fox Theatre. Open auditions for the play’s 21 roles will be held on Sunday, February 12, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Room 125, Life Hall. 8 had its much heralded, single-night Broadway debut last fall with an all-star cast that included Morgan Freeman, Ellen Barkin, John Lithgow, Anthony Edwards, Rob Reiner, and Christine Lahti, among others. George Clooney has signed on to appear in a reading of 8 in Los Angeles on March 3. Patrick King, a senior majoring in theatre production design, is producing the Montclair State reading as his senior class project. The director is Michael Allen, assistant professor of stage/production and arts management, and deputy chair of production in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State, who is also overseeing King’s senior project.
