Course Credits and Semester Hours

Student majors in the Theatre and Dance programs at Montclair State must complete course work specific to their major degree programs, in addition to General Education requirements, as well as a World Languages and a World Cultures requirement.

Academic credits are awarded on the semester hour (S.H.) basis. One semester hour, usually representing 50 minutes of class activity per week for 15 weeks, is equal to one credit. The majority of dance courses are worth 3 credits (although we also offer courses from .5 credits to 2 credits.)

Theatre and dance programs offer lecture courses and studio courses, as well as courses that combine the two. As a major, students must be prepared to devote a substantial amount of time outside of class in order to complete assignments. Work required outside of class will vary by course and assignment; however, as a general rule of thumb, students should expect to fulfill the following minimum hours of work outside of class each week:

  • For Lecture courses meeting for 3 hours per week in class, students are expected to work a minimum of 6 hours per week outside of class to complete assignments.
  • For lower level Studio courses meeting for 5 hours and 20 minutes per week in class, students are expected to work a minimum of 6 hours per week outside of class to complete assignments.
  • For intermediate and advanced studio courses meeting for 5 hours and 20 minutes per week in class, students are expected to work a minimum of 6 hours per week outside of class to complete assignments.
