Statement of Objective
The Red Hawk Swim Club is a competitive swim program sponsored by the
Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Montclair State University.
The program is designed for competitive swimmers of all ages, primarily
children ages 18 and under, and provides both pre-competitive and competitive
levels. The primary objective of the program is to provide the highest
level of competitive swimming in a structure that provides multiple training
opportunities.
Brief History
Established in 1992, the Red Hawk Swim Club has provided competitive swimming
opportunities for over 1000 athletes ages 5 to 75. Participants have been
provided with everything from beginning instruction in the four competitive
strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly) to racing
starts, turns, and technical stroke development drills. As a member of
USA Swimming and New Jersey Swimming, the Red Hawk Swim Club provides
its members with opportunities to compete in meets ranging from novice
competitions to national championships based on athletes’ performances
throughout the season.
Coaching Philosophy
The coaching staff strives to not only develop competitive swimming ability
in their athletes, but also to educate their members in a variety of areas
including overall health and fitness, time management, study habits, and
supplemental training techniques. Of course, the main task the program’s
coaches face is to develop each athlete’s swimming ability, but
the need to go beyond the obvious is recognized and addressed each day.
The coaches strive to develop personal relationships with each athlete
and help each of them succeed in all aspects of life. Success of an athlete
depends on such factors as diet, sleep habits, and stress levels in addition
to the obvious task of physical conditioning through training. The Red
Hawk Swim Club coaching staff recognizes that swimming is but one element
in the lives of their young athletes, and they provide age-appropriate
guidance to both parents and swimmers alike.
