All freshmen and transfer students with less than 24 semester hours are required to take the Montclair State University Placement Test (MSUPT) prior to registering for course work. This test is designed to determine competency levels in Reading, Writing and Elementary Algebra.
The purpose of the MSUPT is to provide information about your individual skills in the English language and Mathematics. The result of this test will Not affect your admission to the University. Rather, this information will help you and your academic advisor in making decisions about the kinds of courses you are prepared to take. Therefore, it is very important that you perform to the best of your ability, as your scores will help determine either you take remedial or regular courses.
The scores of the Montclair State University Placement Test will help identify those students whose deficiencies in reading, writing and mathematics may reduce their chances of success in the University. If your scores on the placement test indicate that you need developmental courses, then you must enroll in these required Basic Skills courses in your first semester and complete these requirements during your first year of enrollment.
