LGBTQ Center Awareness Day
What's Happening
On Monday, September 15th, members of the Montclair State University community will have the opportunity to visit a tent in the Student Center Quad from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. to meet peer educators, sign up for Safe Space training sessions, and learn about the important ways our Center creates a campus environment inclusive and supportive of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression through education, advocacy, and support for students, faculty, and staff.
At Noon, the Coordinator of the LGBTQ Center, Mr. Brian Edwards, will be reading a letter from President Barack Obama that was sent personally to our LGBTQ Center in recognition of the special place Centers like ours hold in the hearts of our communities.
Peer Educators of the LGBTQ Center will also be handing out give-a-ways throughout the day! Show your Montclair Pride by stopping by!
Why It's Important
LGBTQ Centers across our nation build, unite, and empower the LGBTQ community by offering services including; social services, counseling, cultural, recreational, and educational programs and activities, support groups, youth support, elder support, library and computer services, and referral resources, just to name a few. Here at Montclair State University, we offer a wide variety of resources for the entire campus community and Northern NJ region.

LGBTQ Center Awareness Day's Origins
This event originated in 2009 by CenterLink: The Community of LGBT Centers and is "an annual day of awareness promoting the vital services offered by community centers and the central role they play in local communities." This year, members of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals are partnering with CenterLink for LGBT Center Awareness Day to bring light to the similar work of gender and sexuality centers on college and university campuses. Montclair State University is a proud member of the Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals.
