Advising Before You Register

IMPORTANT: All first-year students are required to meet with your advisor before Spring 2015 Registration begins on November 10, 2014. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are strongly encouraged to meet with your academic advisors each semester.

What is academic advising and why is it important…

  • Academic Advising is an educational process that facilitates your understanding of the meaning and purpose of higher education.
  • Academic Advising fosters your intellectual and personal development toward academic success and lifelong learning.
  • Academic Advising should be ongoing throughout your college career.
  • Academic Advising helps you to clarify your personal, educational, and career goals, and to understand how your courses fit into your goals for the future.

Here’s how it works:

Are you a First-Year Student?

You are required to meet with your departmental academic advisor at least once in each of your first two semesters prior to registering. There is a registration hold on your account until you meet with your advisor. Find the name of your advisor on your WESS account.

  • If you have a declared major, please meet with your departmental faculty advisor.
  • If you are undeclared, thinking about changing your major or need extra help, please contact your Center for Advising and Student Transitions (CAST) academic advisor.

Are you a Sophomore?

We strongly recommend you meet with your academic advisor before registration.

  • If you have a declared major, please meet with your department faculty advisor before registration begins.
  • If you are undeclared, thinking about a change of major or need extra help, please reach out your Center for Advising and Student Transition (CAST) advisor or stop by Webster Hall for walk in hours.

Are you are a Junior or Senior?

We strongly recommend you meet with your academic advisor before registration.

  • If you have a declared major, please meet with your department faculty advisor before registration begins.
  • If you are undeclared, considering a change of major or need extra help, please reach out your Academic Success and Retention Program (ASRP) advisor.

Not sure who your advisor is? Log on to WESS for information.
