Dr. Sherestha Saini and Dr. Kenneth Teng, from Springer Science + Business Media, present Publish or perish, an old adage familiar to every scientist, remains evermore truthful in the face of dwindling funding.

Learn about STM Publishers

Under this environment, STM (Scientific, Technical and Medical) publishers play an increasingly direct role in defining academic success. But how well do you know this “frenemy” of your career? The first part of our presentation discusses how STM publishers provide the tools to scientists to achieve recognition in the global scientific community.

Topics we will explore include:

  • Why you should publish
  • Where to publish
  • How to structure an article to maximize the potential for publication
  • What an impact factor means
  • Publication ethics and much more.

We will look at trends in the field as well as some services available to authors to publish and get read.

The Publishing Model

Academic publishing is also a multi-billion dollar global industry. The business model of scholarly communication is rapidly evolving to reflect the changing means of information consumption. What have STM publishers done to remain relevant in the face of self-publishing or wiki-culture? In the second half of this presentation, we shall explore the challenges and rewards of being an editor at Springer, as well as the opportunities available to advanced degree holders.

This talk is intended for young scientists curious to learn more about scientific publishing. This is your chance to ask a publishing editor any questions you may have about book and journal publishing.
