Agenda:

  • 10:00 a.m.:  Welcome. Debbie Galant, Center for Cooperative Media.

  • 10:20 a.m.:  Tommy Gamba and Aly Dupuy, Find the Best: How journalists and others can use FindtheBest.com to do easy data visualizations.

  • 11:00 a.m.: Martin Gonzalez: Martin is a capital market specialist and financial journalist as well as a winner of a Grow & Strengthen 2014 grant. He will show how he mapped every tax parcel and property tax assessment in the state

  • 11:15 a.m.:  Dave Sheingold, The Record: Dave will explain how he comes up data story ideas and executes them in a one-man data journalism shop.

  • 11:45 a.m.:  Angie McGuire, NJ Databook: Angie will demo the new online version of the NJ Legislative Databook and suggest possibilities for mining it during the upcoming hackathon.

  • Noon: Lunch in room, for registrants.

  • 12:30 p.m.: Anthony Ewing, Ethnic NJ: Winner of a 2013 Grow & Strengthen grant, Ewing will show how he used census data to tell map ethnicity in NJ.

  • 12:45 p.m.: Carla Astudillo, NJ Advance Media: Adventures in data journalism, how the sausage is made.

  • 1:30 p.m.: John Levitt, Parse.ly: How Parse.ly can help you understand your readers better, and possible ideas for using its API during the upcoming hackathon
