Drs. Herbert and Fails of the Department of Computer Science will present how their research intersects with sustainability and computational systems. With the recent ecological and volatile climate issues, numerous concerns have arisen which have given greater emphasis to the sustainability sciences. In sustainability studies and related areas, multiple communities need to interact and contribute data, discuss and share that data, and also have this data modeled and visualized in effective ways to facilitate analysis and inferences. In our work, we have developed a collaborative scientific inquiry platform, Geotagger, that allows data integration from multiple sources that allows the user flexibility to learn to participate in their environment. While the platform is versatile, the focus is on supporting mobile scientists. As such we will showcase our platform primarily from the perspective of the mobile Android app. There are many collaboration possibilities with Drs. Herbert and Fails as they design, develop, apply, and evaluate sustainability systems such as Geotagger.

Dr. Katherine Herbert is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Montclair State University. Dr. Herbert currently researches database management, data warehousing and data quality issues in biological, biochemical and sustainability related data sets. Dr. Jerry Alan Fails is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Montclair State University. His general area of research is human computer interaction (HCI), with a focus on technologies that support children’s creativity, mobility, and collaboration.
