From May 14 through 19, 2016, judges from across the world will be on the Montclair State campus to determine which chocolates from the Americas and Asia/Pacific region will go on to the October finals competition in London. Hosted by the Health and Nutrition Sciences Department, the competition brings together bean-to-bar chocolate bars and chocolatier products from diverse cultures to celebrate innovation and excellence in fine chocolate. Entries come from companies with their main office or headquarters in North and South America, Asia-Pacific and Oceania. Types of chocolate include standard and micro-batch categories for plain/origin chocolate bars and all other chocolatier categories – flavored bars, filled chocolates/bonbons and spreads. Winners earn the right to have the prestigious International Chocolate Awards logo on their products, and bragging rights to being the best in the world.

Faculty and students in the program conduct investigations into the sensory analysis of food, food history, science and effects on cultural groups, and studies that assess the effects of food properties on emotions. Special activities on aspects of sensory analysis have been planned for judges.

The University’s work compliments the advanced sensorial evaluation approach of the International Chocolate Awards, which aims to give the fairest and most comprehensive assessment of the retail products entered through our system of ‘managed subjectivity’.

The Americas and Asia-Pacific competition includes standard and micro-batch categories for plain/origin chocolate bars and all other chocolatier categories – flavored bars, filled chocolates/bonbons and spreads. Includes all Americas, Asia-Pacific and Oceania countries and regions, except Canadian chocolatier products, which are judged at the Canadian competition in September.
