The social unrest and instability of institutions in many regions of the world have had massive ripple effects on democracy. Most recently, leaders have been suspended, impeached, and removed.

What does this mean for democratic governance?Join Dr. Philippe Schmitter, co-author of the seminal text Transitions from Authoritarian Rule:  Comparative Perspectives as he untangles and discusses "Democracy and its Discontents."

Dr. Schmitter is an Emeritus Professor of the Department of Political and Social Sciences at the European University Institute, and was previously at Stanford University. He is also one of the founders of democratization studies.
