Kirk McDermid (Montclair State University) leads a group discussion on John Searle and other philosophers’ arguments for and against computer intelligence. John Searle insisted that computers cannot think; they cannot understand. His argument cut against a certain conception of artificial intelligence. In addition, Dr. McDermid will consider Searle’s "Chinese room" thought experiment as well as objections to his argument.
